Congress Excursion
Congress Excursion
Time: 11:30 am Wednesday 23 July 2008
Cost: (includes coach and ferry travel and The Rocks Walking tour, based on 50 participants)
With Macquarie Lighthouse tour: $55
Without Macquarie Lighthouse tour: $50
On Wednesday, 23rd July, conference delegates will be able to enjoy an excursion to take in some of the sights of our beautiful city and dip into its history.
We will be taken by coach from the university to Watsons Bay, to visit Macquarie Lighthouse, which was named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie, (who is also the namesake of our host university) and features in the Macquarie University logo. There are 100 steps to climb, so this is best suited to those who think they would be up to the task. Another option is to wander along the clifftops around the lighthouse and enjoy the scenery. We will then enjoy lunch at the Watsons Bay Hotel (or, for those with more money to spare, the famous Doyles Restaurant, both pictured), looking west across the Harbour towards the city. We will also have some time after lunch to explore the waterfront area.
From Watsons Bay, we will catch a Sydney Ferry (20 min) to Circular Quay, a great opportunity to get a sense of the grand scale of Sydney Harbour and the lifestyle of those who live around it.
At Circular Quay we will be met by guides from The Rocks Walking Tours who will take us on a walking tour (1.5 hours) of The Rocks, a historical waterside area of Sydney, where the ‘voices of the past’ will come alive in stories of the earliest years of European settlement and subsequent development of our city.
After the tour, we will take to the water again as we catch another ferry around to Darling Harbour to join up with the T&I Day participants for the Congress Dinner.
Please note: Details subject to change without notice.
Culturals
"Culturals" on Thursday, 24th July
You may have noticed on the congress program that Thursday night says 'Culturals'. We are hosting an evening where we can hear all the 'voices
from around the world' in cultural entertainment mode.
So this is an invitation to think of a song, dance, poem, joke, skit,
or something else that you might like to contribute, and pack your
costume, musical instrument or song lyrics and be prepared for another
night of relaxed fun.
It will be held in the Uni Bar where there will be drinks available and
an informal BBQ dinner. We will also make some musical instruments
available, e.g. guitar, keyboard, simple percussion, so the guitarists
and pianists among us will have no excuse!
You can sign up with your contribution during the first few days of the
congress, or just decide on the night. If you have any questions or
special requests, let us know at isfc2008@ling.mq.edu.au
