Transport Information

Getting to Macquarie University from Sydney International Airport

Sydney Airport is located approximately 8 km outside the CBD, and about 20km from the University. It is easily accessible by car, train, and taxi, and less so by bus.

Taxi

The taxi station is located at the left side out front. It will cost around A$80-90 to Macquarie University. If you choose to go through the Lane Cove Tunnel, it will be quicker but will cost extra few dollars.

Train & Bus

Follow the signs for the train (to the right), and then buy a Single Adult ticket to Epping Station*. It will cost you A$15.40 and takes approximately 1 hour to Epping Station. Take “Airport and East Hills Line” from the Airport Station to Central Station, then change to “Northern Line”. When you arrive at Epping Station, take either 288, 290, or 295 buses to get to Macquarie University. It will cost A$1.80 and takes about 10 minutes.

*NOTE: Macquarie University Station is currently under construction and may open by ISFC, but Epping Station is the closest station from the university at the present moment.

Traveling in & around Sydney

How can I take a bus in Australia?

When the bus approaches, signal the driver by raising your arm horizontally towards the road. Once you get on the bus, tell your destination to the driver. He/she will let you know the price for the ticket. If you know how much it costs to your destination already and if you travel often, it is a good idea to purchase TravelTen Bus Card from a news agency (you can buy one from U@MQ shop in the university, too).

I will use bus often. Should I buy TravelTen? What is it?

TravelTen is a bus card that you can use it for 10 single trips with up to 20% discount. There are 5 different types depending upon the distance you wish to travel. You will insert it to the machine when you get on the bus. For example, you need TravelTen Green from Macquarie University to the City, and TravelTen Blue from Macquarie University to Epping Station. All the bus ticket prices including TravelTen are available at: http://www.sydneybuses.info/tickets/prices.php#one_day_tickets.

How can I take a train?

You can buy a ticket either from a ticket booth or from a vending machine. It’s always less expensive if you buy a return ticket unless you’re traveling early morning. Once you purchase a ticket, find screens that indicate the time for the next train to your destination. It will also tell you the platform number where the train arrives. The train time table is available at: http://www.cityrail.nsw.gov.au/

I want to go to the city centre! How can I travel from Macquarie University to the city and come back to my hotel?

Take 288, 290, 292, or 203 buses departing from Macquarie Shopping Centre or from the bus stop in the university campus. It will cost you $4.80 one way (a return ticket is not available for buses). To come back to Macquarie University, take the bus from the Bus Stand C in front of Queen Victoria Building (QVB) on York Street. You can find the bus stops inside the Macquarie campus.

I want to go for one-day sightseeing in Sydney! How can I travel cost effectively?

DayTripper is a good idea. You can purchase it either a news agency or on board. It will cost you $16.00 and can be used for Bus, Ferry, and Train for unlimited times until 4 am next day. Please see “PrePay Tickets” below for other types of tickets.
